About Us

Blackthorn Theatre Company was founded in 2008, with the twin goals of make a fresh voice heard in Cork theatre (particularly for younger performers) and providing a platform for new writers and directors to showcase their skills. The brainchild of Luke Field, the company was co-founded by members of the acclaimed PBC production of Brian Friel's "Philadelphia Here I Come!" who all provided funding for the fledgling company's first production.

This maiden production, "Prisoners", was a script written by Field about a bank robbery in small town Ireland and played to a full Cork Arts Theatre on two nights in August 2008. In the making of Prisoners Blackthorn acquired several new members, veterans of Cork's performing arts scene among them.

Blackthorn's follow-up was a modernised take on Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, directed by alumnus member Sean Creagh. Hamlet had a successful theatre run in February of 2009 again bringing new members to the company.

At present we are hard at work to deliver our double bill Lovers:Winners / Grievance for August and we hope it will be a huge success!
